Caregiving
The role of caregiving is sacred. As a caregiver, you provide care for those that need help caring for themselves. Whether you are caring for children, the elderly, or individuals with disabilities and/or chronic illness, you are the front line of support. You may have entered the caregiving role as a family member, friend, or even in a professional capacity. Regardless of the why or how you entered caregiving, your life is significantly impacted as a result. You may love the care you get to provide, while also feeling drained, exhausted, or even burned out.
When you enter the caregiving role, it is natural to put your own needs on the back burner, as you are primarily focused on the person you are caring for. While this may seem like the “right” role to play, it is not sustainable over an extended period of time. The stressors of caregiving impact you both physically and emotionally. It is vital for you to first care for yourself in order to best care for others.
How can therapy help support caregivers?
In therapy, our hope is to provide a place of respite and renewal for you. Even simply having a space that is entirely devoted to you may be your first step to self-care as a caregiver. We strive to create a safe space where you can process the day to day challenges of being a caregiver, as well as process how it is impacting you in each area of your life. With the help of your therapist, our goal is that you leave the therapeutic space feeling seen, valued and supported as you continue to provide care for others.
