EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on accessing and processing traumatic events and enables you to minimize and heal from emotional distress caused by trauma. EMDR therapy uses specific, detailed protocols where clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes. EMDR works to activate of all parts of the brain, reconnecting you with the event through self-thoughts, emotions, and body sensations and allowing the natural healing powers of the brain to move toward an adaptive solution and transforming wounds through reprocessing of the event, ultimately shifting negative thoughts and beliefs about oneself to positive ones.
EMDR is based on the idea that symptoms surface when trauma overwhelms the brain’s natural ability to heal. EMDR therapists are trained to assist you through the process of bilateral stimulation as you re-experience the trauma in a safe environment to begin reprocessing the event and creating new meaning around the event until it is no longer psychologically disruptive.
How can EMDR help you?
EMDR is an evidence-based treatment specifically designed for trauma and some studies show that 84%-90% of single-trauma survivors no longer have post-traumatic stress disorder after only three 90-minute sessions.
